Origin and history

The Baux-de-Provence Hospital is a building built in the 16th century, on the initiative of Jeanne de Quiqueran, wife of Honoré des Martins, then governor of the Baux. The work, begun in 1542, was completed in 1583, marking the establishment of an establishment to accommodate the sick and needy in the region. Located near the Baux Castle, it is a testament to the commitment of local elites to charitable works in the Renaissance.

The hospital has been classified as historic monuments since 9 June 1904, recognizing its heritage value. Today, nothing remains but remains, but its history remains linked to that of the seigneury of the Baux and to the evolution of health structures in Provence. The location of the building, in the heart of Bouches-du-Rhône, makes it a key element of the Alpilles heritage.

The construction of this hospital is part of a broader development of hospital institutions in Europe in the 16th century, a period marked by recurrent epidemics and growing awareness of social needs. In Baux-de-Provence, as in other Provencal cities, these establishments played a central role in community life, providing care and assistance to the local population.
