Origin and history
The former Hôtel-Dieu de Pont-Saint-Esprit, originally monastery of the Visitation Sainte-Marie, was built in the 17th century as a typical example of urban conventual architecture linked to the Counter-Reform in Languedoc. Its cloistered galleries conserve original painted decorations, while the ceilings and flooring, as well as a set of 17th and 18th century paneled doors, testify to its rich artistic and artisanal heritage. The site reflects the influence of religious orders in the urban and social life of the region at that time.
In the mid-19th century (1850), the architect Fontanille designed the current hospital buildings, integrating pre-existing monastic structures. The whole, fully protected since 2005, thus combines religious heritage and modern medical function. Architectural elements, such as the painted decorations of the cloister, highlight the transition between spiritual vocation and charitable use, characteristic of the Provincial God Hotels.
Ranked a Historic Monument, the site now belongs to a public institution. Its official address, 9 boulevard Carnot in Pont-Saint-Esprit (Gard), and its confirmed GPS location (estimated at 8/10) make it an accessible heritage, although the modalities of visit (opening, renting) are not specified in the available sources. Photographs, such as those of Thomas Rokita under Creative Commons license, document his current state.
