Origin and history

The Franco-British Hospital, located in Levallois-Perret, originated in the Hertford British Hospital, founded in 1872 by Sir Richard Wallace, heir to the Marquis d'Hertford. The latter, after noting the lack of medical facilities for the British during the 1870 war, financed the construction of a dedicated hospital. Inaugurated in 1879, the neo-Gothic building, designed by architect Ernest Sanson, is rewarded with the silver medal of the Central Society of Architects. It is intended to treat British subjects residing in France, with funding provided by collections and sponsorship of the British royal family.

In 1885, Madame de Vaticenil founded the association Oeuvre du Perpétuel-Secours and created the hospital Notre-Dame du Perpétuel Secours, offering free care in Levallois-Perret. Both institutions merged in 2008 to form the Institut hospitalier franco-British, before becoming in 2019 the Franco-British hospital under the management of the Cognacq-Jay Foundation. The historic Hertford British Hospital building, classified in 1987, is now partially leased to businesses, while medical activities are concentrated in modern buildings built in 1982 and renovated since.

The hospital played a major role in local medical history, welcoming personalities like Rudolf Noureev and Jérôme Savary at the end of their lives. In 1914, King George V and Queen Mary visited the settlement, marking its symbolic importance. After joining the French care system in 1978, he became a key player in the Western Paris Hospital Alliance, with 270 beds and 700 employees in 2021. Its architecture, facades and protected roofs testify to its historical heritage and its adaptation to contemporary medical needs.
