Origin and history
The Chalucet Hospital, located in Toulon, in the Var (Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur), was founded in 1700 under the impulse of Monsignor Bonnin de Chalucet, then bishop of the city. Built as a "hospital-god" under the name "hospital de la Charité", it incorporates a chapel whose facade still retains today a statue of its founder. This monument, partially destroyed in the 21st century, has been converted into a cultural hub, including the Chalucet Media Library and higher education institutions, on the edge of the Alexander I Garden, an ancient green space of the hospital.
The patrimonial protection of the Chalucet Hospital comes by decree of 10 June 1993, covering specifically the chapel (outside the hall of the patients of the Attica), the facades and roofs of the entrance pavilion, as well as the public garden – excluding modern amenities. This site, now communal property, symbolizes the transition between historical medical use and a contemporary vocation to culture and education. Its inscription in historical monuments underscores its role in Toulouse's urban planning, between hospital memory and current dynamism.
The Alexander I Garden, formerly attached to the hospital, completes this heritage by offering a remarkable green space in the heart of the city. The transformations of the early 21st century preserved certain architectural elements while integrating modern functions, reflecting the challenges of rehabilitating the old building. The sources, such as the works of Quentin Rochet (2024), document its evolution since the seventeenth century, confirming its importance in the urban history of Toulon.
