Origin and history

The former hospital of Châteaudun is housed in a building dependent on the Madeleine Abbey, whose central part, dating from the 18th century, is distinguished by a half-roton decorated with sculptures. This architectural contrast contrasts with the central, deliberately sober wing. The 18th century works left a monumental staircase and vaulted rooms, still visible today.

In the 19th century, the site was enlarged with two wings in return, extended in the style of the original building, as well as a neo-Roman chapel erected at the back of the central pavilion. These additions complied with the original order, while adapting the whole to the hospital needs of the time. The hospital was partially classified as a Historical Monument in 1948 (rotunda and central part), then registered in 1949 for its lateral wings.

The monument illustrates the reuse of a religious heritage (the Madeleine Abbey) for medical and social purposes, typical of the urban transformations of the 18th and 19th centuries. Its protection as historical monuments underscores the architectural and heritage value of the site, now owned by the commune of Châteaudun.
