Origin and history
The Hospital of Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines is a historic monument located in the municipality of the same name, in the department of Haut-Rhin, in the Grand Est region. Built in the 15th century, this building is representative of medieval hospital architecture in Alsace. It was classified as historical monuments in 1898, especially for its remarkable murals, which attest to the artistic and religious importance of the time.
In the 15th century, medieval hospitals played a central role in the Alsatian cities, providing care and accommodation for the poor, pilgrims and the sick. These institutions were often run by religious communities or secular brotherhoods, reflecting a social organization in which Christian charity occupied a major place. In Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines, a city marked by mining, such a hospital could also be used to accommodate injured or sick workers, illustrating the link between economic activity and local solidarity.
