Origin and history

The hospital-hospice Sainte-Beatrix de Remiremont was built around 1724, during the first quarter of the eighteenth century, on a plot "outside the walls" of the city. He replaced a previous hospice of the same name, demolished to allow its construction. This new establishment has retained remarkable elements, such as its ancient pharmacy pots, testimonies of its historical medical use.

The monument owes its name to Béatrice-Hieronyme de Lorraine, abbesse de Remiremont, a local religious figure linked to its foundation or its history. Only the entrance gate, including a niche surmounted by a stone statue, was protected as historical monuments by a decree of 20 August 1974. This partial classification underscores the heritage value of this architectural element.

Today, the former hospice hospital belongs to the municipality of Remiremont and is located in 1 Square of 170th Infantry Regiment. Although its initial vocation has evolved, the site remains a marker of the hospital and religious history of the Vosges, integrated with the heritage of the Great East.
