Medallion embedded in the façade: inscription by decree of 2 February 1931
Origin and history
The Hospice de Sospel is a historic monument located in the municipality of Sospel, in the department of Alpes-Maritimes. Built in the 16th century, it bears witness to the architecture and charitable uses of this period in the region. His medallion embedded in the façade, classified by decree of 2 February 1931, constitutes one of the few protected elements still visible today.
In the 16th century, hospices played a central role in the towns and villages of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. They served as shelter for travellers, the poor and the sick, reflecting a social organization marked by community solidarity and the influence of the Church. These establishments were often located on transit routes, such as Sospel, a strategic city close to the Italian border.
The location of the Sospel Hospice at 8 Auda Street is documented in the Merimée base, although geographical accuracy is considered poor (note of 5/10). The building, although partially studied, remains an example of local heritage linked to the hospital and religious history of the region. No additional information is available on its founders, its precise uses or its subsequent architectural evolution.
