Origin and history

The Hospital of the Holy Trinity, called Hospice de la Charité de Beaune, was founded in 1645 by Antoine Rousseau and Barbe Deslandes. Built from houses dating from the late 15th or early 16th century, it preserves elements of large work in the west building, built in the 17th century. The house of the founders, probably from the first half of the 17th century, and the buildings along Rue Rousseau-Deslandes date back to the 18th century, when the walls and fireplaces of the apartments were also rebuilt.

The establishment is organised around a rectangular court of honor, accessible by a portal in a basket handle. This portal links the house of the founders to the Sainte-Anne-Saint-Antoine building in the east. The apartments of the sisters and orphans occupied the west building. The chapel, the sacristy, the reception office and the refectory of the sisters were classified as historical monuments in 1975, while the façades, roofs and gates of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries were inscribed on the same date.

In the 19th century, the building was erected between 1820 and 1826 by architect Louis Moyne, and a north wing was added in 1892. Today, the hospice has become a home for the elderly, perpetuating its vocation of reception and care initiated from its foundation.

The protected elements include the chapel, the sacristy, the refectory of the sisters, as well as the facades and roofs of the 17th and 18th century buildings. Two entrance gates, one on Rue Rousseau-Deslandes and the other on the impasse leading to Rue Jean-Belin, are also registered. The ensemble illustrates the architectural and social evolution of a hospital over centuries.
