Origin and history
The Saint-Louis Hospital of Saint-Germain-en-Laye finds its origins in a house-God founded in 1228 to welcome the poor and the travellers. In 1619 the establishment was entrusted to the recollets and became a hotel-God, before being replaced by a house of Charity in 1649, then by the Hôtel-Dieu de la Charité in 1670. The Marquise de Montespan founded a general hospital there in 1693, transformed into a hospice for old men in 1753. These two institutions merged in 1803, marking a key step in the evolution of the site.
In the 19th century, a new building was built thanks to a public subscription and a donation from Baron Gérard in 1876. The architect Alfred Normand led the work between 1878 and 1881, including a chapel blessed in 1884, decorated with stencil paintings and a mosaic signed "E. Paris - 1883". The establishment became a public hospital in 1956, before joining the Centre hospitalier intercommunal de Poissy-Saint-Germain-en-Laye (CHIPS) in 1997.
The chapel, classified as a historic monument in 1997, illustrates the hospital architecture of the late 19th century. Alfred Normand, his designer, also supervised redevelopments in 1931 with architects Émile Choret and H. Robbe. Although partially disused in the 21st century for an urban project, the site retains its medical role, specialized in cancerology and outpatient surgery, while being part of the local heritage.
The hospital is part of a broader history of shared care in Île-de-France. As a result of the merger with Poissy Hospital in 1997, CHIPS abandoned a project to regroup in Chambourcy to modernize its two sites. The current building of Saint-Germain-en-Laye, centered on consultations and day hospitalisation, coexists with a new pole in Poissy, inaugurated in 2020. The chapel remains an emblematic vestige of its charitable and architectural past.
