Hostellerie du Vieux Peruges (cad. 1411): by order of 7 August 1941
Origin and history
The Hostellerie du Vieux Peruges is an iconic building located in Peruges, in the department of Ain, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. This building houses a hostel still in operation in 2020, whose entrance leads to Place de la Halle, also known as Place du Tilleul. Its architecture and its use bear witness to medieval and modern hospital traditions in this characteristic city.
The building was classified as historic monuments on November 24, 1921, recognizing its heritage value. Later, in 1941, the hostel itself received similar protection, with a classification order dated 7 August. These measures underline the cultural and historical importance of the site, both for its building and for its continuous activity, rare for an establishment of that time.
Perugia, a preserved medieval village, was a place of passage and exchange where the hostelleries played a central role. These establishments offered lodging and shelter for travellers, merchants and pilgrims, while serving as a place of local sociality. The Hostellerie du Vieux Peruges is part of this tradition, perpetuating a hospital function several times centenary, in a remarkable architectural setting.
