Origin and history
The hotel at 10 rue de Chastillon in Châlons-en-Champagne is a 17th-century monument, composed of a house body between courtyard and garden, a wing in return and two entrance pavilions. Its facade alternates bricks and chalk, while the frames of the bays are made of Savonnières stone. Inside, an 18th-century structural staircase, a marble fireplace and panelling testify to its past prestige. The entrance gate, decorated with crossettes and surmounted by a moulure cornice, also dates from the 18th century, when the hotel underwent major transformations.
In the middle of the 18th century, the buildings were renovated: the wooden wing was built, the windows enlarged, and the interior decorated according to the taste of the era. The first known owner, Jean-Baptiste Adrien, a fish merchant, acquired the house in 1783. In 1966, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Châlons-sur-Marne became a tenant before the Regional Chamber became owner in 1991. Major restorations took place in 1993, including the renovation of the wooden facades, windows and wing.
Ranked a Historic Monument in 1983 for its facades, roofs and interior staircase, the hotel has been home to the Champagne-Ardenne Chamber of Commerce and Industry since 1965. This headquarters symbolizes the mutualisation of regional economic actions, under the supervision of the Ministries of Industry and SMEs. The building, combining architectural heritage and institutional function, illustrates the evolution of the uses of private hotels in France.
Protected elements include facades, roofs, and stairs with its wrought iron ramp. The main body, dated from the 17th century, was modified in the 18th century, with a lengthened structure and redone interior decorations. The stables, now destroyed, once completed this set enclosed by a chalk wall. The site preserves traces of the 18th and 20th century works, mixing historical heritage and modern adaptations.
