Jean-Baptiste Briffon - Royal Notary and Third State Representative Hotel sponsor and builder.

Origin and history

The hotel located 3 rue de la Ville in Verdun-sur-Garonne was built in the last quarter of the eighteenth century, under the Ancien Régime. His sponsor, Jean-Baptiste Briffon, a royal notary and representative of the Third State, played an active role in the preparation of the grievance books and the organization of the assembly of the country of Rivière-Verdun in 1789. The building illustrates the civil architecture of this period, with a neoclassical facade typical of the Louis XVI style, marked by neat ornaments and a rigorous symmetry.

The house is structured around a central stairwell, characteristic of the mansions of the time. On the ground floor, rooms keep gypsums, moulded plaster decorations very popular in the bourgeois interiors of the eighteenth century. The garden, on a terrace overlooking the old city walls, offers panoramic views of the Garonne plain, reinforcing the property's prestige.

The Briffon Hotel bears witness to the social ambitions of its owner, an influential member of the local bourgeoisie. Its partial inscription in the Historical Monuments in 2006 (facades, roofs, stairwells and adorned lounge) underscores the heritage value of this complex, both residential and symbolic. The location of Verdun-sur-Garonne, in the present Tarn-et-Garonne, places this monument in a historical context marked by the political transformations of the late eighteenth century.
