Leroy - Architect
Master of the Hotel Amblard.
Origin and history
The Amblard Hotel, located in Agen, is a historic monument built in 1773 by architect Leroy. This building illustrates the civil architecture of the eighteenth century, with a monumental gate with flat pilasters, framed by two small buildings connected by a curved wall. The central door of the facade, rounded, adds to its distinctive character. Its style recalls that of the Hotel d'Escoulsubres, remains of the older brother of the Pelissier family, although of smaller dimensions.
The monument is partially protected, with its facades and roofs inscribed by decree of 20 June 1950. The official address, 1 Floirac Street, is supplemented by an approximate GPS location at 13 B Rue Puits du Saumon. The accuracy of this location is considered fair (note 5/10), and a photo licensed under Creative Commons (MOSSOT credit) is associated with the monument.
The Amblard Hotel is part of the urban context of Agen in the 18th century, a period marked by the development of private hotels for bourgeois or aristocratic families. These residences reflected the social status of their owners and often served as reception places. Their architecture, inspired by Parisian models, reflected the cultural influence of the capital in the provinces. Agen, a dynamic city thanks to its commercial and administrative activities, saw this type of construction increase, symbols of prosperity and refinement.
