Origin and history

The Hotel Andras de Marcy, 14 rue Creuse in Nevers, is an iconic building built around 1470, in the last quarter of the 15th century. It embodies the local architectural evolution, with a late first Gothic phase, followed by a major transformation around 1560: the facade on courtyard, originally Gothic, is replaced by a manerist facade, reflecting the artistic influences of the Renaissance. This reshaping is accompanied by the creation of an arcade gallery on several levels, whose first floor has a ceiling with caissons decorated with grotesques inscribed in medallions, dated 1565-1570.

In 1584, the building was divided into two autonomous hotels, each with an independent entrance gate. This split marks an adaptation to the residential needs of the time, probably related to changes in ownership or usage. At the end of the 18th century, the hotel took the name of its new owners, the Andras de Marcy family, before undergoing new functional changes: in the 19th century, its attic was fitted out into lingerie workshops, and ancillary buildings were erected in the courtyard, reflecting its integration into local economic activity.

The Hotel Andras de Marcy has been a member of the Historic Monuments since July 11, 2001, with a protection covering facades, roofs, gate, street wall, as well as the manerist ensemble formed by the courtyard facade and the gallery of the first floor. These elements underline its heritage importance, mixing medieval heritage and Renaissance innovations. Its history also reflects the social and economic dynamics of Nevers, a city marked by its role as capital of the Duchy of Nivernais and its growing artisanal activity in the 17th and 18th centuries.

The available sources (Merimée, Monumentum, Wikipedia) confirm its status as a hybrid monument, where stylistic and functional strata overlap. The arcade gallery, in particular, illustrates the early adoption of Italian motifs in French architecture, while subsequent developments (workshops, portals) reveal a constant adaptation to urban uses. Today, the hotel remains a major testimony of the evolution of the Nivernais building, between aristocratic residence, place of production and protected heritage
