Forged iron staircase ramp: inscription by order of 26 October 1927

Origin and history

The Hotel Arquata is an emblematic building of Toulouse, built in the 16th century. This monument, located in Place Sainte-Scarbes, is representative of the civil architecture of the Toulouse Renaissance. Although little detailed historical information is available, its partial inscription in the Historical Monuments in 1927 is a testament to its heritage importance, especially for its wrought iron staircase ramp, a remarkable architectural element of this period.

In the 16th century, Toulouse was a prosperous city marked by the pastel trade and an influential urban elite. Private hotels, such as Hotel Arquata, reflected the social status of their owners and served as reception and representation venues. These urban residences often incorporated sophisticated decorative elements, such as wrought iron ramps, symbols of wealth and craftsmanship. Their preservation makes it possible today to understand the way of life of the Toulouse elites of the Renaissance.

The protection of the staircase by ministerial decree in 1927 underscores the artistic value of this element. This type of ornamentation, typical of the wealthy mansions of the sixteenth century, illustrates the evolution of metalworking techniques and the influence of Italian styles in southwestern France. The exact address, 1 Place Sainte-Scarbes, and its Insee code (31555) confirm its anchoring in the historic centre of Toulouse, today in the Occitanie region.
