Origin and history
The Banchereau Hotel is a private hotel built in the early eighteenth century in Saint-Malo, in the department of Ille-et-Vilaine. This building illustrates the civil architecture of the period, marked by the rise of the city's maritime and commercial activities. It is representative of the residences of the Malouin traders and shipowners, who derive their wealth from trade and race.
The hotel is built by Banchereau, a merchant and shipowner from Tours, associated with Quentin and Banchereau armament. This type of residence reflects the high social status of its owners, often involved in shipping and colonial trade. The inscription of its facades, roofs and skylights in 1942 underscores its heritage importance.
Historical sources, such as the works of Philippe Petout or the bulletins of the Ille-et-Vilaine Archaeological Society, confirm his role in the urban history of Saint-Malo. Originally identified as an old privateer's house, the hotel also bears witness to the links between the city and the legal and non-legal racing activities that marked its economy in the 17th and 18th centuries. Engineer Garengeau is mentioned as a prime contractor, although his exact role remains to be clarified.
Located at 3 rue d'Orléans, the Banchereau Hotel is part of the Malouin architectural landscape, alongside other Malouin and private hotels. Its inscription as a historical monument in 1942 protects key elements such as its chimney stumps and its skylights, characteristic of the buildings of the era. Archives and databases, such as Mérimée, document their location and protections.
