Georges Joseph Barth - Deputy Clerk and architect of Haguenau Builder and first owner of the hotel.

Origin and history

Hotel Barth is a historic monument located in Haguenau, in the department of Bas-Rhin, in the Grand Est region. Built in the second half of the 18th century, around 1760, this building is representative of the civil architecture of this period in Alsace. It was designed by and for Georges Joseph Barth, then sub-greffier and architect of the city of Haguenau, which makes it a testament to local urban planning and the technical skills of its owner.

The Barth Hotel is distinguished by its street façade, roof and staircase, elements protected by a decree of inscription for historical monuments dated 5 April 1930. Located at 59 Grande'Rue, it is now owned by a municipal public institution. This building reflects the social status of its sponsor, as well as the importance of private hotels in the urban landscape of Alsatian cities in the 18th century.

The precise location of the Barth hotel is documented in the Merimée base, with an official address at 59 Grande-Rue, although approximate GPS coordinates suggest an address close to 61 Grand-Rue. This minor disparity illustrates the challenges of historical location in heritage databases. The monument remains a notable example of Haguenau's architectural heritage, which is included in the lists of historical monuments of the Bas-Rhin and the city.

The building is associated with various documentary sources, including Wikipedia, Monumentum, and the internal data of the Merimée database. These references allow us to trace its history, from its construction to its protection in 1930. The Barth Hotel thus embodies a page of local history, linked to both the municipal administration and the architectural evolution of Haguenau under the Ancien Régime.
