Origin and history
Hotel Bonnot de Villevrain is a historic monument located in Bourg-Saint-Andéol, in the department of Ardèche (region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes). Built during the 2nd quarter of the 18th century, this mansion illustrates the refined civil architecture of this period, marked by the influence of classical styles and the emergence of an easy bourgeoisie. Its protected elements, such as facades, roofs, the large interior staircase with its ramp, and the large hall with a French ceiling, testify to artisanal know-how and aesthetic concern unique to the period.
The building was registered as Historic Monuments by order of 10 October 1961, an official recognition of its heritage value. The protections specifically concern emblematic parts such as the stairwell and its decor, as well as the room with the ceilings, reflecting the social status of its former owners. Although the available sources (Monumentum, Mérimée base) do not specify its current use, its exact address — 47 Rue Olivier de Serre — allows it to be located with an accuracy deemed satisfactory (note 7/10).
The historical context of Bourg-Saint-Andéol in the 18th century is that of a developing city, integrated into a dynamic regional economic network, thanks in particular to its position on the right bank of the Rhone. Private hotels, such as the Bonnot de Villevrain, often served as residences for wealthy families (noblesse, merchant bourgeoisie or robine), while playing a role in local social life. Their preservation today offers a material testimony of the lifestyles and social hierarchies of the Old Regime.
