Origin and history

The Hotel de Pigenat, also known as the Hotel de Foresta or Bresc, is a private hotel located at 17 rue du Quatre-Septembre in Aix-en-Provence. Built in the mid-17th century, it embodies the civil architecture of this period in the Provençal region. Its facades and painted ceiling, including the dome of stairs, have been protected since 1929 as historical monuments.

The hotel has changed owners several times over the centuries. He first belonged to the Pigenat family, then passed to the Foresta between 1811 and 1852. Then acquired by Louis de Bresc, he remained in this family until after World War I, before being sold again to the Foresta. This monument thus illustrates the social and heritage changes of the Aixese aristocracy.

The partial inscription to the historical monuments in 1929 specifically concerns the facades and painted ceiling of the dome of stairs. This protection highlights the artistic and historical value of the building, while preserving representative architectural elements of the 17th century in Aix.
