Origin and history
Hotel Brillat-Savarin is a private hotel located in Belley, in the department of Ain. This monument, built mostly in the sixteenth century, is distinguished by its architecture characteristic of this period. It is located at n°62 of the Grande Rue, in downtown Belley, and was listed as historical monuments in 1926.
The hotel was one of the properties of Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin (1755-1826), famous French astronomer and magistrate. It also owned a manor house in Vieu-en-Valromey, about 20 km north of Belley. Although the text does not specify the details of his occupation of the hotel, his name remains associated with this local heritage.
The building embodies Belley's architectural and cultural history, a city marked by its medieval past and its administrative role in the region. Its inscription in 1926 bears witness to its heritage value, thus preserving a key part of the heritage of the Ain and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
