Origin and history

The Hotel Brongniart, also known as Hotel de Luppé, is a private hotel built in 1781 by architect Alexandre-Théodore Brongniart for his personal use. Located at the corner of Boulevard des Invalides and Rue Oudinot (7th arrondissement), it is distinguished by its six-column doric peristyle and an entrance decorated with foxhead mascarons. Originally, the building had only three levels (ground floor, ground floor, first floor), before being raised at a later stage.

The hotel changes hands several times after its construction. Brongniart offered it to his daughter Louise-Théodore and his son-in-law Naval de Saint-Aubin, who sold it in 1793. He then passed into the hands of the jurisconsult André-Joseph Abrial (died 1828), then of his son, the politician André Pierre Étienne Abrial, before being ceded to the Sénac family. In 1881 the Viscountess Gabrielle-Jeanne Calon de Luppé became its owner, followed in 1912 by the Marquise de Rosanbo. In 1948, her son sold it to Cainagod, and the hotel remained from private property.

The façade on Boulevard des Invalides, characteristic of the neoclassical style, has been listed at the Historic Monuments since 29 March 1926. The neighbouring building, the Hotel de Montmorin (27 rue Oudinot), also dated 1781, now houses the Overseas Ministry. The two buildings share a related architectural history, as Brongniart has redesigned the facades on the courtyard of the Montmorin hotel.

The main entrance, located at 22 rue Oudinot, consists of two portals surmounted by egg-eyes and mascarons. Despite its transformations (addition of two levels), the hotel retains remarkable original elements, testifying to the expertise of its architect. No public visit is permitted, the place remaining a private residence.
