Amédée Milvoy - Architect
Designer of Hotel Bullot, Art Nouveau.
Origin and history
The Hotel Bullot, located 6 boulevard Carnot in Amiens, was built between 1898 and 1899 by architect Amédée Milvoy, figure of the nascent Art Nouveau movement. The latter advocated a return to the study of nature, which is reflected in the monumental decoration of the building, mixing organic motifs and fluid lines. The facades and interiors, such as carved woodwork or painted ceilings, bear witness to this duality between stylistic innovation and references to Louis XVI and Napoleon III styles, creating a unique architectural ensemble for the period.
The building changed its vocation over the 20th century: sold in 1953 at the hospital in Amiens, it will house a nursing school until 1988, when the Cozette Foundation for Social Works became its owner. Despite these transformations, the hotel retained much of its original decor, including varnished ceramic elements and worked door frames. Ranked Historic Monument by decree of 17 August 2001, it now embodies a preserved heritage, symbol of the transition between the traditional decorative arts and the avant-gardes of the early twentieth century.
The architect Amédée Milvoy, although less well known than his contemporaries like Hector Guimard, played a key role in disseminating the principles of Art Nouveau in Picardie. His work on Hotel Bullot reveals a mastery of materials and techniques, while integrating naturalistic themes dear to the movement. The accuracy of the location (noted 8/10) and the preservation of the interior elements make it a remarkable example of the regional adaptation of this artistic current, often associated with metropolises such as Paris or Nancy.
