Origin and history
Hotel Calemard de Montjoly is a private hotel located in Craponne-sur-Arzon, in the Haute-Loire department, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built in the 17th century on pre-existing foundations, it illustrates the classical architecture of the Velay nobility, with a square plan and a four-piece interior organization. Its staircase, backed by the adjacent north wall, communicates with the neighbouring house by two openings, while its cage features rectangular paneled woodwork and a typical 17th century turned wooden balustrade.
The interiors of the hotel preserve remarkable decorative elements, reflecting two centuries of stylistic evolution. On the ground floor, the kitchen has a fireplace surmounted by a 17th century woodwork coat, while the large living room is decorated with 18th century ground woodwork. Upstairs, an alcove room offers Louis XVI style décor. These developments, characteristic of the noble homes of the time, bear witness to the refinement of aristocratic life in the Velay.
Sponsored for a family of the local nobility, the hotel adopts an architectural and decorative style representative of its time. Its designation as historic monuments by order of 21 August 1992 protects, inter alia, its stairwell, chimneys, woodwork and pavements. These elements, combined with its location in the heart of Craponne-sur-Arzon (place aux Fruits), make it a preserved example of the traditional regional heritage.
The Velay region, where Craponne-sur-Arzon is located, was historically marked by an influential noble and bourgeois society, whose homes such as this mansion reflected social status. These buildings served as both residences and venues, incorporating sumptuous decorations to impress visitors. The Hotel Calemard de Montjoly thus fits into a context where domestic architecture became a prestige marker.
