Origin and history
The hotel Calvet de la Palun is a private hotel built in Avignon, in the department of Vaucluse, in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur. Designed by architect Jean-Pierre Franque, it embodies the Louis XVI style and was completed in 1789, marking the last architectural achievement of the 18th century in the city. His inspiration is similar to the Little Trianon, according to the analyses of historian A. Breton.
Ordered by Antoine Joseph François Xavier Calvet de la Palun, the hotel was initially located in the Palais Square. In 1853, the Bank of France installed its offices there, modifying the main façade: the original entrance, located in Place du Palais, was replaced by a window, while a new building was added to move the main access to the Clock. These transformations partially altered its original appearance.
After the departure of the Banque de France, the hotel underwent a major reconversion. In 2016, he reopened under the name of Carré du Palais, a commercial complex integrating shops and public spaces. Ranked a historic monument since 1927 for its facades and roofs, it illustrates the evolution of the uses of Avignon's private hotels, moving from aristocratic housing to institutional functions and then trading.
Heritage protections specifically concern facades and roofs, registered by order of 2 June 1927. The official address, 3 Place du Palais, is located in the heart of the historic centre of Avignon, close to other listed monuments. Available sources, including Wikipedia and the Merimée base, highlight its architectural and urban importance.
