Origin and history

The Hotel Castiaux is a private hotel located at 7 rue Desmazières in Lille, in the Nord department. Built in 1886 by architect Émile Vandenbergh for Eugène Castiaux, master printer, this building is distinguished by its avant-garde style, mixing stone, wrought iron and carved wood. It is considered a precursor of Art Nouveau because of its creative freedom and ornamental details, such as the curved windows or the workshop terrace.

The hotel was inhabited by Eugène Castiaux until 1935, before being abandoned and threatened with demolition. Sauvé thanks to an exhibition at the Lille Festival in 1980, he was listed as a historical monument on 9 July 1981 for his facades, roofs, ironworks, vestibule, glass staircase and mosaic veranda. Today, it bears witness to Lille's architectural and industrial heritage at the end of the 19th century.

The protected elements include façade, roof, ironwork, vestibule, staircase with glass cage, and veranda decorated with painted glass and mosaics. The building, a private property, illustrates the influence of the decorative arts on the Lille bourgeois architecture, while reflecting the economic dynamism of the region, linked to printing and textile industries.

The Castiaux hotel has been studied, notably in L'Hôtel Castiaux: a witness of the Lille decor, 1880-1900 (1980) and specialized articles such as Jacqueline Grislain's in 1977. This work highlights its role in the evolution of architectural styles between eclecticism and modernity, as well as its anchoring in the urban landscape of Lille, marked by a rich and diverse heritage.
