Origin and history

The hotel Catel-Béghin is a private hotel located in Lille, in the Nord department, on the boulevard de la Liberté. Commanded by André Catel-Béghin, an industrialist, merchant and mayor of Lille from 1873 to 1878, he was erected by architect Henri Contamine and completed in 1877. This monument illustrates the splendor of bourgeois residences of the period, combining Renaissance and classicism references, with a richly decorated facade and a preserved interior decor.

In the 20th century, the hotel was used by the social service of the northern prefecture before being decommissioned in 1995. Abandoned for fifteen years, it was purchased in 2010 by a family SCI after being acquired by the Northern General Council. Together, including the stables, was inscribed in the historic monuments on 6 May 2014, highlighting its heritage importance.

Architecturally, the Hotel Catel-Beghin is distinguished by its Second Empire style, marked by a classic composition and carved ornaments. It is one of the rare examples preserved in Lille of these great 19th century private hotels, having preserved their original distribution and decor. The journal L-Architecture and Construction in the North provided a detailed description in 1895, mentioning the artists who contributed to its creation.
