Origin and history

The Lanusse then Bouguereau hotel, located at 15 rue Verdière in La Rochelle, is an iconic 18th-century building. Built for the Lanusse family, it is characterized by an ordered façade and a main building body on raised ground floor. This hotel, contiguous to that of Rue Réaumur, now prefecture, reflects the aristocratic architecture of the time.

In the 19th century, works were undertaken, notably during the drilling of rue Jean-Guiton (now Léonce-Vieljeux), and a trompe-l'oeil was painted by Berry. The north building body was raised before the end of the 19th century. The hotel was then occupied by the Bouguereau family, and painter William Bouguereau stayed there regularly before dying there in 1905.

Ranked a historic monument by decree of 14 February 1962, the hotel is protected for its painted decoration of the main staircase. This ranking underscores its heritage importance and its role in local history, combining architectural heritage and artistic memory.
