Origin and history

The Hôtel Charrier is a bourgeois house located in Issoire, Puy-de-Dôme, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built in the 18th century, it features a flamboyant 15th century Gothic gate, a vestige of an earlier building. This portal, in third-point with a tympanum adorned with a false reamping, illustrates the architectural art of the late Middle Ages, typical of the affluent homes of that time.

The Gothic Gate of Hotel Charrier is considered a remarkable example of late medieval bourgeois architecture. It is distinguished by its flamboyant style, characterized by complex decorative motifs and slender lines. This type of door, often associated with churches or private hotels, reflects the high social status of the owners of the time.

The history of the Hotel Charrier is marked by a tragic event: on the night of 8 June 1592, Yves d'Allègre, governor of Issoire appointed by Henry IV, and Françoise d'Estrée, Gabrielle's mother, were murdered there. This episode is part of the context of the Wars of Religion that agitated France at the end of the sixteenth century, opposed Catholics and Protestants.

The facade and roof of the Hotel Charrier, overlooking the Place de la République, were inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 9 December 1983. This protection recognizes the heritage value of the building, particularly for its Gothic gate, a rare and well preserved element in a more recent construction.

The exact address of Hotel Charrier is 18 Place de la République in Issoire. Although information on its GPS location is considered poor (note of 5/10), its location in the city centre makes it an accessible monument integrated with the city's historic urban fabric.
