Origin and history
Hotel Clément is an iconic urban building in Issoire, built at the end of the 15th century. It preserves prominent medieval elements such as a stair turret, ground floor bays and a corner niche, originally intended to house a statue of Saint-Austeroine. These characteristics illustrate its anchoring in the architecture of the late Middle Ages, while revealing its adaptation to the needs of the city.
In the 17th and 18th centuries, the hotel underwent major changes, especially in its interior decor, now in classic style. The floors, huisseries and chimneys of the period were preserved, reflecting the evolution of tastes and techniques. The building is said to have been renovated to accommodate justice officers or royal officials, highlighting its role in local administration and social status.
The Hotel Clément has been listed as a Historic Monument in 2010, and is fully protected, including its interior decorations. Its location in the city centre, Place de la République, and its history make it a privileged witness to the urban and architectural transformations of Issoire, from the medieval period to the modern era. The property now belongs to a private company, but its heritage remains accessible through its original architecture and amenities.
