Origin and history

The Côte-Blatin hotel is a private hotel built in 1897 in Clermont-Ferrand, in the 9th course of Sablon, by architect Émile Camut for Joseph Cote-Blatin, businessman and vice-president of the General Council of Puy-de-Dôme. This notable, born Joseph Cote (1845-1917), adopted the name Cote-Blatin after his marriage in 1872 with Antoinette Blatin, daughter of a general councillor. The architect, known for his work at Mont-Dore and Thuret, designed a neo-Louis XV facade made of Volvic stone, with neat interior decorations (ironwork staircase, marble fireplaces, curved partitions).

The protection of the hotel as a historic monument, effective since 2 July 2010, covers the entire house, including its interior fittings, its back wing and its back garden. The facade is distinguished by its four asymmetrical spans, its oval skylights, and a lateral forebody in stone. Inside, the reception rooms on the ground floor and the upstairs rooms retain original decorative elements, such as wrought ironwork and carpentry with tympanums.

The building, slightly back from the Sablon course, contrasts with its surroundings by its slate roof, rare in Clermont-Ferrand where tiles or roof terraces dominate. Its sponsor, Joseph Cote-Blatin, embodies the social rise of local notables at the end of the 19th century, mixing economic activities and political commitment. The hotel thus illustrates bourgeois architecture of this period, combining discreet luxury and historical stylistic references.
