Origin and history

Hotel Courtin de Torsay is a private hotel located 50, rue d'Huisne in La Ferté-Bernard, Sarthe. Built around 1660, it embodies the Renaissance style of bourgeois houses, inspired by Parisian models. Equipped with a cochère door, it would have been built for Denis Gaudin, king's adviser and assessor of the maré floor, reflecting the prestige of royal officers and local notables.

The interior was deeply transformed during a restoration in 1877, altering its original appearance. Given to the city in the 1950s, the hotel housed the municipal library until 2015, then briefly the offices of the mayor and his councillors. Today, it is the subject of reflections for its rehabilitation, after having been partially classified as a historical monument in 1993 (facades, roofs and rooms on the ground floor).

One wing of commons, built around 1772 (date reached), remains, while another one has disappeared. The building, owned by the municipality, bears witness to the urban and architectural evolution of La Ferté-Bernard, between aristocratic heritage and contemporary public uses. Its classification covers external elements and some interiors, highlighting its heritage value.

Available sources (Wikipedia, Monumentum) mention minor inconsistencies in the exact address (42 or 50 rue d'Huisne), but agree on its historical role and location in the city centre. The hotel is part of the landscape of the protected monuments of the Sarthe, an area marked by a rich civil and religious heritage.
