Origin and history

The hotel Courtois de Langlade, located at 6 rue de la Calade in Arles, is a typical example of Arlesian private hotels, having undergone several reconstructions. Its oldest parts, including the decor of its inner courtyard, date back to the late 16th century. This building illustrates the architectural and social evolution of the city throughout the centuries, with stylistic influences marked by periods of renovation.

Originally, the house belonged to the Icard-Pérignan family, who had another hotel built in 1651 in the Roquette district. In 1730, Jacques de Perrin, a criminal lieutenant, acquired the building and undertook major works, including the reconstruction of the façade on rue de la Calade in 1737 to comply with an order of alignment. This rock-style decor reflects artistic trends under Louis XV, with mascarons, baskets of flowers and horns of abundance.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the hotel became an institution for young people in 1804, before being bought by the Courtois of Langlade, a family of wealthy landowners. In the 1930s, it was acquired by the State and has been home to the Arles sub-prefecture. Ranked a historic monument in 1932, it bears witness to the heritage importance of private hotels in the urban history of Arles.

The façade, decorated with rock motifs, is comparable to that of the hotels in Aix at the same time, such as those of Albertas (1725) or Villeneuve d'Ansouis (1740). These architectural elements highlight the cultural exchanges between Arles and Aix-en-Provence in the 18th century. Today, the Courtois hotel in Langlade remains a symbol of Arlesian heritage, mixing local history and artistic heritage.
