Origin and history

The Hôtel d'Angennes de Rambouillet is a private hotel located in 20 Place des Vosges, in the 4th arrondissement of Paris. Built in 1607 by the architect Jean Fontaine for Nicolas d'Angennes de Rambouillet, it is part of the prestigious Place des Vosges, one of the oldest planned squares in the capital. Its 14.45-metre-long façade overlooks the square, while the back opens onto the rue des Tournelles.

In 1643, the hotel was acquired by Gaspard II of Fieubet for 39,000 pounds. Two years later, in 1645, he entrusted the architect Charles Chamois with a major transformation: restoration of the facades on the square and the courtyard, interior redevelopment with the displacement of the large staircase, and creation of a large room as well as a chapel in the wings. These changes were designed to modernize and embellish space, reflecting 17th century architectural taste.

The hotel met several owners, including Drouin Barrois before its acquisition by Gaspard II from Fieubet. His son, Gaspard III of Fieubet, will later leave the premises to settle in the Hotel Fieubet. In 1955, the façade, the roofs, the gallery on the square and the wrought iron staircase were protected as historical monuments, recognizing their exceptional heritage value.

Today, the Hotel d'Angennes de Rambouillet bears witness to the aristocratic residential architecture of the early seventeenth century. Its location on Place des Vosges, surrounded by other private hotels such as those of Clermont-Tonnerre and Laffemas, makes it a key part of the Parisian heritage. The 1955 protections guarantee the preservation of its most remarkable elements, while stressing its historical and architectural importance.
