Origin and history
The hotel of Orcet is a private hotel located in Mauriac, in the department of Cantal (region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes). Built in the 16th century, it is distinguished by its architecture and its history linked to public administration. The building, located on Rue Guillaume Duprat in the city centre, has been hosting the services of the sub-prefecture since 1829. Its integration into the urban fabric reflects the importance of state institutions in small French cities as early as the 19th century.
The entrance door to the Hotel d'Orcet, called "Door Gate", is a vestige of the monastery of St Peter, rebuilt in modern times. This tympanum, dating from the 16th century, was classified as historical monuments by order of 15 February 1928, while the whole building was inscribed on 19 May 1927. These protections highlight the heritage value of the site, combining religious heritage and administrative use.
The hotel is now open to the public during the European Heritage Days, offering an overview of its architecture and historical role. The property belongs to the department of Cantal, and its official address (5750 Rue du Collège) makes it a central place in the city. Available sources, such as the Merimée base or Wikipedia, confirm its status as a protected monument and its dual vocation, both historical and administrative.
