Origin and history

The Uzes hotel, built in Tonnerre in the second half of the 16th century, is a remarkable example of Renaissance architecture. It was built by Jean Canelle (1503-1562), rich bourgeois and receiver of aids and sizes, after 1556. The date of 1533, engraved during a restoration in 1888, is incorrect. His descendants occupied the site until 1651, before the building became associated with Louise de Clermont, Countess of Tonnerre and wife of the Duke of Uzès, who frequently stayed there.

The monument is also known as the birthplace of the Knight of Eon, born on October 5, 1728. Acquired by the Savings Bank in 1879, he underwent a controversial restoration in 1888, including two side statues. Ranked a Historic Monument in 1926, it preserves a courtyard and a facade decorated with Renaissance motifs (Arabic, fauna, shells), although the original set was reduced.

In 2018, the hotel served as a set for the show Secrets d'Histoire (France 3) for an episode on the Chevalier d'Eon. Today it is privately owned and illustrates the mix of local history, refined architecture and iconic figures, such as the Countess of Tonnerre or the famous transgender spy.
