Origin and history

The Bagis hotel, also known as the Hotel of Clary or Daguin, is a private hotel located at 25 rue de la Dalbade, in the historic centre of Toulouse. Built in 1537 by the architect Nicolas Bachelier for Jean de Bagis, an adviser to the Parliament, it is distinguished by its stone facade, a rarity in a city then dominated by brick. The facade on courtyard, decorated with Atlantes, bears witness to the influence of the Italian Renaissance, while the facade on street, added in 1611 by Pierre Souffron, remains unfinished until the 19th century.

Jean de Bagis, an influential personality close to Catherine de Medici, ordered the hotel in 1537. At his death, the building passed to his daughter Marguerite, then to his son-in-law Jean de Paulo, before being sold in 1601 to Nicolas de Guerrier, an enriched apothecary. In 1609 François de Clary, the first president of Toulouse's parliament, undertook important works, including the stone façade, nicknamed a stone hotel. Accused of having hijacked stones destined for the Pont Neuf, he died in 1616 before the completion of the sculptures.

In the 17th century, the hotel changed hands several times: Richard Dejean, Baron de Launac and capitoul, acquired around 1654, before he passed in 1710 to Jean-Joseph Daguin, councillor in Parliament. During the Revolution, the last owner, guillotined in 1794, saw the hotel confiscated and sold as national property. In 1855, Calvet-Besson finally completed the sculptures of the façade, led by the Urban Vitry architect.

The hotel is organized around a central courtyard and a garden bordering the Garonnette. The facade on the street, richly carved with pilasters, trophies of arms and garlands, bears the coat of arms of François de Clary. The interior courtyard retains Renaissance elements, such as the Atlantean Gate and Doric Column windows, inspiring other Toulouse hotels. The interior houses painted ceilings, a monumental fireplace and a straight staircase, among the first of the city.

The hotel of Bagis, a historic monument in 1889, embodies Toulouse's architectural evolution, combining Renaissance innovation and local traditions. Its restorations, such as the cleaning of the façade in 1998, underline its heritage importance. Today, there remains an exceptional testimony of Toulouse's political and artistic history in the 16th and 17th centuries.
