Origin and history
The Hotel de Belzunce, located at 8 rue de la Salie in Bayonne, is one of the oldest buildings on this street, built at the hinge of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. According to oral tradition, it belonged to the Belzunce family, although this attribution remains uncertain. The building is distinguished by its spatial organization: a square inner courtyard, accessible after crossing a more recent building, precedes a porch leading to the first level. The central body, flanked by two wings in return for square, preserves on its eastern and southern facades a remarkable architectural decoration, with horizontal bands highlighting the floors and rectangular windows framed with harnessed chains in working.
The entrance door, housed in the corner of the east and south wings, has a semi-hexagonal section in the plane. It is decorated with pilasters bearing a carved lintel, surmounted by a broken triangular pediment from which emerges a ball peduncle. Inside, the staircase rests on a square pillar receiving the edges of the vaults, while a stone Atlante, backed by a pillar of the vestibule, bears witness to the artistic refinement of the period. These elements, as well as the west and north fronts on courtyard with their adjoining roofs, were protected by an inscription at the Historic Monuments on February 1, 1988.
The exact address of the hotel, 8 rue de la Salie, corresponds to the Insee 64102 code of the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Although the accuracy of its location is considered "passable" (note 5/10), the building remains a significant example of Bayonnaise civil architecture in the first half of the 17th century, mixing classical influences and local particularisms. Available sources, including Monumentum, highlight its heritage interest, without providing details about its historical occupants or its specific original function.
