Origin and history

The Hôtel de Boussugues, located at the 27 Grands Rue Jean-Moulin in Montpellier, was rebuilt in the second half of the 18th century, during the 3rd quarter of this century. Before the Revolution, the building extended to the rue des Ouves, parallel to the Grand Rue. Its spatial organization is based on a main façade building, a square inner courtyard and a vaulted entrance passage, designed in a bias to align the refend walls with the rue du Cygne. This obliquity, masked by a arched arch, allows a geometric harmony between the four sides of the court, almost identical.

Each facade of the courtyard rests on two arches in basket handle, separated by canned pilasters. The upper floors are pierced by two windows per level, the first floor being decorated with Corinthian pilasters. The ground arches and the scabs carved from foliage wrapped around double corolla roses illustrate the care taken in the decoration. The vaulted passage and the courtyard façades, classified in 1963, bear witness to the heritage importance of this architectural complex.

The hotel, representative of the 18th century Montpellierian urbanism, combines functionality and aesthetics. Its ingenious plan, adapted to the constraints of the medieval parcellar, reflects the evolution of the particular hotels of the period, where symmetry and classical ornamentation took a central place. The location in the heart of the city, on a major commercial axis (the Grand Rue), highlights its role in the social and economic life of Montpellier under the Ancien Régime.
