Origin and history
The hotel of Buffon is an 18th century mansion located in Buffon Square in Montbard, in Côte-d Built on the initiative of Georges-Louis Leclerc de Buffon, it replaces the paternal house demolished after a family conflict. Buffon set up a work firm, laboratory and menagerie, marking the beginning of his scientific career.
Ranked a historic monument on November 14, 1988, the hotel sees its facades, roofs, terraces and retaining walls protected by a decree. Interiors are registered on the same date. The building illustrates the architectural and intellectual heritage of Buffon, a major figure of the Enlightenment.
The hotel was built in the first half of the 18th century, with modifications in the third quarter of the 19th century. Joseph Seguin is mentioned as a masterpiece. Owned by the municipality, the monument bears witness to the influence of Buffon on the city of Montbard, where it marked the local and scientific history.
The hotel is linked to the tumultuous life of Buffon, including his opposition to his father, remarried to a young woman of 28 years his youngest. This family conflict led Buffon to recover land in Montbard and build his hotel, a symbol of his independence and intellectual ambition.
