The facades and roofs of the hotel and its communes, with a return to the rue Lavoisier (cad. AS 886) : inscription by decree of 29 December 1983

Origin and history

The hotel of Chavigny is a private hotel located in Chinon, Indre-et-Loire, whose origins date back to the 15th century. The monument is distinguished by its closed square structure, accessible by a 15th century fortified gate. This entrance is surmounted by a courtine and a round road with mâchicoulis and decorative crenelages, characteristic of late medieval defensive buildings. At the northeast corner, a perpendicular building extends the courtine, while a polygonal staircase turret, with a Renaissance flat pilaster and triangular pediment, bears witness to subsequent changes.

The facades of the inner courtyard were profoundly altered in the 18th century, reflecting the evolution of architectural tastes towards a more classical style. An angle turret, probably added in the 19th century, completes this heteroclite ensemble, mixing medieval defensive elements, Renaissance details and more recent developments. The hotel thus illustrates centuries of architectural history, from the late Middle Ages to the modern era.

Hotel de Chavigny has been listed as a historical monument since 29 December 1983. This protection specifically concerns the facades and roofs of the hotel and its communes, including the return to Lavoisier Street. The monument, located at 6 rue de Buffon in Chinon, remains a remarkable example of a particular hotel that has preserved traces of its various phases of construction and beautification.
