Origin and history
The Hotel de Clermont-Tonnerre is an iconic mansion located on Place des Vosges, in the 4th arrondissement of Paris. Built in the early seventeenth century, it embodies the classical architecture of this period, marked by the symmetry and elegance of the facades. This building is part of the homogeneous whole of Place des Vosges, the first royal square in Paris, designed under Henri IV to symbolize urban renaissance and monarchy prestige.
The hotel is distinguished by its facade on the square, its arcade gallery and its roofs, elements protected by a classification as historical monuments in 1954. This classification, formalized by a decree of 26 October 1954, specifically covers the façade, the gallery (including the floor) and all the roofs of the main building. The building is located in 18 Place des Vosges, between the hotels of Asfeldt and Angennes de Rambouillet, on the east side of the square.
It is important to note that another hotel with the same name, the former hotel of Clermont-Tonnerre, was located at the 27th quay of the Tournelle in the 5th arrondissement. This distinction highlights the toponymic and heritage evolution of Paris, where some names of noble families have been associated with several residences over the centuries. No information is available in the sources about the original owners or architects of the hotel of Place des Vosges.
The Place des Vosges, to which this hotel belongs, is a place full of history, conceived as an aristocratic residential space. The private hotels that border it, including that of Clermont-Tonnerre, reflect the lifestyle of the Parisian elites of the seventeenth century, combining social representation and urban comfort. Today, these buildings reflect the visionary urban planning of the modern era and the preservation of the French architectural heritage.
