Origin and history

The Hotel de Condé is a private hotel built in the middle of the seventeenth century in Angers, characterized by a regular U-plan. The main housing body, located on the right, faces the commons in the left wing, connected by a narrow body at the back of the courtyard. The elevations, on a square floor, have long-paned and crouped roofs, with a base that compensates for the slope of the terrain. The street gate, the wrought iron ramp staircase, as well as several doors and panellings date from the initial construction.

At the end of the seventeenth century, the hotel belonged to the Nepveu d'Urbé family, a member of which could be its sponsor. At the beginning of the 18th century, Antoine de Lesperonnière de la Rochebardoul, heir to the estate, undertook important works: reconstruction of the wing of the commons and unification of the plan in U. The residence was acquired in 1727 by the mother of François-Charles Pays-Duvau, president of the Presidual, who made interior arrangements there (parquets, chimneys) and modified the windows.

Major restorations took place in the 1980s and 1990s, with the repair of the gate and the addition of neo-XVIII century skylights on the body of commons. The hotel, classified as a Historical Monument in 1983 for its facades, roofs, fireplaces and staircase, bears witness to the architectural and social evolution of the Angelian aristocracy between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
