Origin and history

The Hotel de Conflans, located in Gray, is an emblematic monument of the sixteenth century, characterized by its refined civil architecture. The main body of the building includes cot vaulted cellars, an external staircase and a screw staircase, as well as a vaulted vaulted rectory. These elements illustrate the constructive techniques of the Renaissance, combining functionality and aesthetics.

Built in the first half of the 16th century, the hotel was occupied by the Jesuits from 1678 until the end of the 18th century. During this period, it was connected to their college by a covered passage, crossing a cartway leading to the inner courtyard. The ground floor, now transformed into a shop, bears witness to the successive adaptations of the building. The regular garden, once present, has disappeared.

Ranked Historic Monument by decree of 16 February 1987, the Hotel de Conflans protects remarkable elements: the facades and roofs of the house, a tower with its staircase, as well as fireplaces of the 17th and 18th centuries. These protections highlight the heritage value of the site, both for its architecture and its history related to Jesuit education.

The precise address, 69 Grande-Rue to Gray (Haute-Saône), and its Insee code (70279) anchor the monument in the territory of Burgundy-Franche-Comté. The location, noted as "a priori satisfactory" (level 7/10), clearly identifies this heritage in the heart of the city.
