Origin and history

The Beauvau-Craon Hotel, also known as the Craon Hotel, is a private hotel built in the 18th century in Nancy, on Place de la Carrière. It was built by architect Germain Boffrand, first architect of Duke Léopold I of Lorraine, for Marc de Beauvau-Craon, husband of the Duke's favourite. This building served as a model for Emmanuel Heré for the construction of the Merchant Exchange between 1752 and 1753, located opposite. Herere also modified the hotel by removing its carved balustrade when the square was standardized.

The Hotel de Craon is now the seat of the Nancy Court of Appeal. Like all the buildings in the Place de la Carrière, it is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was protected as a historical monument by order of 7 February 1924. Its architecture reflects the influence of Lorrain classicism and the importance of Nancy as a cultural capital during the reign of the Dukes of Lorraine.

Place de la Carrière, where the hotel is located, is an iconic architectural ensemble of Nancy, designed to symbolize the power and prestige of the ducal court. The Hotel de Craon, with its elegant lines and its history linked to the Lorraine nobility, embodies the golden age of the city in the eighteenth century, marked by exceptional artistic and political influence.
