Origin and history

The Hotel de Crespy, located in Angers en Maine-et-Loire, is a private hotel whose current structure dates mainly from the seventeenth century. The building consists of five houses around two courtyards and a side garden. The facades, mostly in schist stone, incorporate tufted elements, especially in the upper parts. A pavilion roof covers the central part of the body on the street, while remains of the 15th century remain, such as a decor painted in the current boiler room and a door walled in the fence wall.

The reconstruction of the hotel at the beginning of the seventeenth century could be attributed to Jean-Jacques Lasnier de Leffretière, a member of an influential angeline family. In the mid-17th century, the monument passed through an alliance with the Crespys, who undertook major changes around 1714, as evidenced by the dates on the facades. This work campaign includes the facades of the house and the portal. The interior decor of the living room, dating from the mid-18th century, as well as subsequent modifications to the 19th century (moving the stairway, elevations) mark the architectural evolution of the building.

Ranked a Historical Monument in 1983 for its facades and roofs, the Hotel de Crespy illustrates the successive transformations of an aristocratic home, mixing medieval heritage and adaptations to the tastes of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Its history reflects the family alliances and stylistic evolutions of Angelvin architecture, while preserving traces of its older past.
