Origin and history
The hotel of Croy-Chasnel and Pierre Bucher, located in Grenoble, consists of two separate buildings. The oldest part, dating from the 16th century, overlooks the courtyard and illustrates the first Grenoblais Renaissance. This building, with sober and elegant lines, reflects the influence of Italian models which then spread in Dauphiné, marking a break with the late Gothic still dominant.
The second building, built or profoundly redesigned in the 18th century, opens onto the street and embodies the Grenobloise private architecture of that time. Its interior fittings, partially retouched in the 19th century, make it one of the most advanced examples of the local aristocratic residential style. The ensemble, classified as Historical Monument in 1988, offers a panorama of four centuries of urban history, from the Renaissance to the modern era.
The hotel owes its name to two notable families: the Croy-Chasnel, probably linked to the Renaissance part, and Pierre Bucher (or Buchet according to sources), associated with the classical period. These families, members of the Grenoblus elite, embody the social and political role of these homes, places of power and representation. The location of the hotel, between Brocherie Street and Notre Dame Square, highlights its anchoring in the historic heart of the city, close to religious and judicial institutions.
The protection of the building in 1988 (inscription by decree) preserved its major architectural elements, including facades, roofs and interior distributions. Although the sources do not specify its current use, its conservation bears witness to the heritage importance attached to this type of building, reflecting the artistic and social changes in Grenoble between the 16th and 18th centuries.
