Origin and history

The Dartein Hotel is a historic monument located at 17 rue des Charpentiers, in the city centre of Strasbourg. This building, whose facade and staircase have been protected since 1927, illustrates the civil architecture of the eighteenth century, during which time it was completely rebuilt. Its location, facing the impasse of the Charpentiers, makes it a remarkable element of the Strasbourg heritage.

The hotel belonged for three centuries to the Boecklin family of Boecklinsau, an influential lineage of the local nobility. In 1761 it was acquired by Count Christian Frédéric Dagobert of Waldner of Freundstein, before passing in 1776 to Christine de Saxony. These changes of property reflect the social and political dynamics of the pre-revolutionary Alsace, where alliances between aristocratic families played a key role.

Ranked among the historical monuments since 21 December 1927, the Hotel de Dartein bears witness to the heritage importance of Strasbourg, a city marked by both French and Germanic influences. Its protection specifically concerns the facade on street and staircase, architectural elements characteristic of its time. Today, it is part of the list of historical monuments of the Lower Rhine and contributes to the cultural richness of the Greater East region.
