Origin and history

The Hôtel de François-Marc is a private hotel built in 1490 in the centre of Grenoble. He owes his name to François Marc, adviser to the Parliament of the Dauphiné, who was one of its occupants. Its medieval architecture, with a portal surmounted by a carved shield representing a winged lion (symbol of St Mark), is remarkable. Behind this gate, a vaulted passage on cross of warheads leads to an inner courtyard, where a stair turret has a lintel carved with a dais d'honneur and a family coat of arms, hammered during the Revolution.

The building underwent renovations in the 17th and 19th centuries. Originally listed as historical monuments in 1927 and then in 1990, it was finally classified on June 12, 1992. Its location at 22 rue Barnave, in the historic heart of Grenoble, and its architectural elements make it a significant example of the Dauphinian civil heritage of the late Middle Ages.

The hotel illustrates the architectural and social evolution of Grenoble, a city marked by its political and judicial role under the Ancien Régime. The Dauphiné Parliament, of which François Marc was a member, played a central role in the local administration, and private hotels like this reflected the prestige of their occupants. The presence of the winged lion, symbol of St Mark, could indicate a religious or symbolic dimension related to the family owner.
