Origin and history
The Hotel de Gayon, located in Montpellier, is a historic monument whose main vestige is the bosses portal. This portal, dated from the first half of the seventeenth century, is characteristic of the classical architecture of the region. Its decorative elements, such as diamond tip bosses and ground capital pilasters, reflect a neat craftsmanship. The basket loops, adorned harpsets and the broken circular pediment frame a small square window, highlighting the elegance of the ensemble.
Mentioned in the compoix of 1614, this building probably belonged to a wealthy family in Montpellier, as evidenced by the quality of its portal. The old vantals and the recast-worked apparatus, with spindle crossettes, reinforce its historical character. Ranked Historic Monument in 1964, only the portal (cad. L 1560, 1561, 1561bis, 1562) is protected, offering an overview of the 17th century Montpellierian civil architecture.
The location of the Hôtel de Gayon, at 1 rue de la Vieille (or 1 Rue Draperie Rouge according to GPS sources), places this monument in the heart of the historic centre of Montpellier. Although information about his visit or current use is missing, his portal remains a major architectural testimony of the modern era in Occitanie. The accuracy of its location is estimated to be poor (note 5/10), which may complicate its accurate field identification.
